Jackleg Coffee - About Us

The term ‘Jackleg’ drill was a combination of two common words. The ‘Jack’ came from a common name for a miner during the time the drill was invented. The 'Leg' referred to the hydraulic leg which was used to support the drill by providing pressure into the rock which was drilled into. It was booming when it was first invented during the Industrial Revolution in the late 1940s. The drill increased the productivity rate by an astronomical amount. It can weigh up to 120 lb, and the mechanic who fixes this machinery is called the ‘Drill-Doctor’. Even though some people would say it is a relic instrument, the drill is still being used to this day across Canada.

How It Began...

It all started when I began my career as an underground miner in one of the Sudbury mines. I quickly realized that the combination of heat, darkness, and humming of machinery made it very difficult to focus and stay awake. I started drinking coffee and made it my every morning ritual before going to work. After a couple of years, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work oversea in Indonesia. While I was there, I tried the local coffee, and over time I began to realize the different flavors and sensations that coffee gave me.

Something new...

During the weekends, I tried over 20 different coffee blends and single origin in Indonesia, and every blend surprised me. Then I thought to myself that this was new, I had to get my family and friends to try this. Ever since then, I had been dreaming about introducing Indonesian coffee beans to my fellow Canadians.

The Journey...

After coming back to the Nickel City, I spent time traveling the nation while visiting over 50 great coffee shops spreading across the provinces, getting inspiration, and craving the coffee taste and flavors that I had while I was in Indonesia. At the time, I realized that miners are genuinely fueled by caffeine, and I could not get that same coffee sensation and aftertaste that I had during my time in Indonesia.

Finally...

These experiences shaped into the idea of introducing Indonesian Coffee into Canada. After searching around for others who had done the same, and finding nothing, I decided to turn my dream into reality. Thus, I created 'Jackleg Coffee' to share the dream and journey that I had with others. The name 'Jackleg' was inspired by the drilling machinery used in mining. It reminds me of the good ol' days and the time when I had a good Cup of Joe while mining underground back in Indonesia.
